Mother Nature bestowed a gift of survival on each of her beloved creatures, whether it be the art of assassination, built in booby traps, body armor, weaponry, camouflage, weather protection, or even a form of Morse code to send messages to one's brethren.
Caterpillars that can shoot a stream of acid and hit a bull's-eye, insects that carry their own multi-purpose hunting knife, spiders that drift on the wind for miles dangling from silken parachutes, and wasps that smuggle their babies into another wasp's nursery, all possess tactics that help guarantee the survival of their species.
Humans aren't always on board with these wizards of survival, and we've delved into the black art of population control using man-made viruses and bacteria. In the case of one invasive sea creature, rather than attempting birth control, the government launched a campaign urging us to eat as many of these creatures as possible to control their spread. According to the government sales pitch, "We can't possibly eat too many of them."
While we're releasing biological agents to control the population of some species, we're allowing others to go extinct, and some of the animals facing the biggest risk of extinction would surprise you — the big cats.
King of the Forest, which is the third book in the Acre of America Backyard Nature Series, highlights not only the wizards of survival that live on our one acre, it takes you deep inside the world of the big cats, some of which are already extinct — as in gone forever.
Book one of An Acre of America Backyard Nature Series includes Mother Nature's witches, wizards, dragons, ghosts, magic rings, evil genies, tree blobs, pentagrams, and Halloween. Thus it is titled The Wizard of Awe though I think of it as the Halloween book. Book two takes you into the world of hummingbirds and the dangers that they face from enemies such as praying mantises, cannibalflies and spiders. It also showcases the rainbow of colors from Mother Nature's palette and is thus titled Over the Hummingbird's Rainbow. The third volume called King of the Forest plunges you into the lion's den, comparing creatures we encounter every day to the mighty lion. From the majestic maned lions of Africa and Asia, to the mountain lions of the United States, even the tiny assassin bug has a connection to the king of beasts. Our big cats are in trouble, however, and King of the Forest hopes to spread the word.
Humans were given the gift of intellect and the ability to build virtually anything our imaginations could conjure, but in spite of these gifts, humans are the worst enemy this planet faces, despite thousands of years of collective knowledge, wisdom, and lessons we should have learned.
Yet hope exists as long as there are children who believe in the magic, so be as a child again and experience Mother Nature's glory. Pass the love down to your children and grandchildren so that they'll protect our Mother rather than destroy her. Embrace the world in your own back yard. There's no place like home.

Found this highly entertaining and educational book about NATURE and insects so useful and helpful. This is an ideal book to read to a small child to help them to learn about nature, especially certain flowers, caterpillars, plants, mushrooms, etc. This will show a child or children the beauty of nature as the pictures in this book as SENSATIONAL! Just double tap them to enlarge them and pull on the edges for a full sized picture. When done, press the X on the top of the picture to go back to the text of the book. Speaking of pictures in this book, these are in HD and of superb color, sharpness and quality!
Before I read this book, I had a horrible fear of caterpillars as I was stung in college and had to see a doctor for treatment. It was not as serious as I thought, but until I read this book I was so afraid of them. Now, I see the beauty in the caterpillar, not just the pain!
Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in nature!

King of the Forest An Acre of America Backyard Nature Series 1 Sharon Delarose Reviews
I enjoyed this book. The pictures were really great and I had no idea some of those bugs even existed. Very interesting.
Sharon Delarose has created a book that people who are interested in animals and nature should enjoy. This is a book obviously written as a result of a great deal of meticulous work that is slightly unconventional, but contains a wealth of information. As well as the very interesting facts, I liked the excellent pictures taken by the author of often tiny animals that are difficult to photograph.
I thoroughly recommend it and hope a lot of people will share my enjoyment. King of the Forest deserves a wide audience.
In a class I was taking an instructor informed us that many look but don't see. How true. In this book you are being instructed in how to not only look but to see. You look with an open mind, you look for the unexpected, and not just what you think is there. The life in your back yard can be emence and so interesting. At the same time you are being instructed by the bug photographer lady you will learn some history, some botany, some anthropology, some mythology. She manager to inform us of so much. The jungle in your back yard can be so interesting if you but look for it with open eyes.
I'm not really certain I am the right person to review Sharon Delarose's series about bugs inhabiting the two acres of land I had as a child to grow up on because, for reasons I've never understood, I was born with a programmed from before the womb, I think, aversion...no FEAR of creepy crawlies.
Okay, I can see all of you are raising your brows and looking askance upon my lovely Ladybug countenance and saying. "Sure pull my other leg," But it's true. Even harmless ants made my skin crawl.
However, that said, I must admit, if Ms. Delarose was not a gifted presenter of the world that usually is way below my less than perfect sight, I would not be cringing and having a case of the heebie jeebies right now.
Maybe I am the reason so many of these creatures, that DO have their place in the ecosystem we all play a part in, needs such a series as the one Ms. Delarose is documenting.
I couldn't help wondering, if such a series had been part of my early curriculum I might not be squeamish still, after all these years?
Ms. Delarose's love for the gulp creepy-to-me crawlies comes through in the masterfully presented text of her book, and she presents a reasonable explanation for why bugs are a positive part of our world.
So in all fairness to Ms. Delarose and the multitude that love bugs, and those who, through this book, will COME to love bugs, I award this book FIVE STARS.
Ms. Delarose, I envy your great affection for the insects walking, crawling, hopping, and flying among us. I wish I didn't have this predilection to fear them.
Hopefully your words will help future generations of children to love them as much as you do.
