In the great American tradition of the spooky campfire tale, New York Times bestselling author E.G. Foley presents 50 States of Fear, a frightful-but-funny paranormal series for kids, set in all 50 States! From Civil War ghosts in Alabama to weird Wyoming cowboy legends, there’s always something to scream about in Ahhhh!-merica.

Welcome to Alabama, y’all! By day—sunshine and Southern hospitality. But by night, the ghosts of the Old South come alive…

Four nights in a haunted mansion? When 12-year-old Colin Donovan leaves New York with his mom and sister on a road trip to visit his sweet ol’ Southern grandma, he doesn’t expect to encounter—ghosts! Unfortunately, Grandma’s new apartment lies within the walls of Sycamore Hall, a mysterious old plantation house shrouded in local lore.

That night, Colin hears chilling spectral voices, comes face-to-face with a phantom—and gets scared nearly out of his wits! But nobody messes with his grandma. So, to protect her, the mild-mannered seventh-grader turns ghost hunter, vowing to find out who or what is haunting the place. Some of the restless spirits he faces still hold antique grudges. And none of them want their home invaded by a kid in a Yankees t-shirt!

The Haunted Plantation (50 States of Fear Alabama) - edition by E.G. Foley. Children eBooks @ . Reviews

This book begins with an entire page of fun facts about the state of Alabama. I really enjoyed that the authors thought to include places to see, a food to try and other details both adults and children would find interesting and maybe even inspire a visit to a state a family or individual has never been to before.
I love history and the Foleys outdid themselves as they made the civil war and its realties come to life through the ghosts. This story would definitely get the attention of an entire classroom of children asking questions and being excited about learning the history of our country. There are also some family problems thrown into the mix which keeps it real. The first person perspective of twelve year old Collin is just the right fit for this tale.
I love the whole idea of a collection of stories about each of our very unique states; for those that haven't experienced our country firsthand these books give you a chance to have a glimpse of the individuality and stories unique to each state.
I would recommend this book and I will share with my grandchildren eight and ten years oldº
This is a wonderful, exciting book. The set up with real life problems, i.e. siblings with usual tensions and not so happy parental situations, is the perfect set up for the real possibility of a boy seeing ghosts. it is so well blended that the reader doesn't have time to think that they are reading fiction.
The history of The Civil War and Brother against Brother is well fleshed out whereas it might not have been brought forth in school. I don't even know how much of the Civil War is taught in school nowadays.
Bringing forth the idea of ghosts to tell the story in small part about the Civil War and just how terrible it really was is brilliant. Instead of it being a boring subject in school it becomes an exciting adventure. It is much easier to learn from excitement than from boredom and this book is anything but boring.
I will tell all of my family that this is a very well worthwhile book to read.
How can one not want to read about angry ghosts who still listen to their Mama no matter how long they have been gone.
Colin, his sister Nadine, and their mother go to visit their Alabama grandmother who has moved into an apartment in Sycamore Hall, family home of the Randall family during the Civil War. Colin feels that something is not right but it is not until he sees a ghost that he realizes what it is. Because his parents have decided to separate for a while, Colin does not want his mother to freak that he is a nutcase so he does not tell anyone about seeing the ghost. When he realizes that the ghost's picture hangs in the dining room he knows he must do what he can to protect his grandmother. But will he be able to protect her? Who is the ghost and why is the ghost hanging around Sycamore Hall? Better yet, can Colin get rid of the ghost or will it get rid of him?

I enjoyed The Haunted Plantation. I love first person POV in a story and this is all Colin's story. His asides are wicked. Loved them! I like the creepy, sinister mood that is set with the short sentences and paragraphs. Colin's unease comes through them. Watching Colin face the ghost alone and deal with his fear of it and worry that his mother and grandmother will think he is crazy if he mentions it is wonderful. When he finally does tell, I liked how his sister responded (well, at least, at first.) The interaction between family members is realistic. The interaction between Colin and the ghost is creepy but he does what he must to help. I also liked that history is woven into the story and that state facts are given before the story begins.

If the rest of the series is like this first book, I will have a hard time waiting for them to come out. This is perfect for those 8 and up. Just enough creepiness but parents will not have to worry that their children will not be able to sleep after reading it.

I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I find ghost stories very interesting. This one was one of the better ones I have read in a while.
Read it for free. Like this author. no scary. good for all ages.
I thought this book was engaging right from the start. I liked the family aspect of this story and how Colin's grandfather also had the "gift" to see ghosts. The only thing that I didn't like was it seemed that the end was rushed. After feuding for decades a couple of sentences from a kid and they decided to move on. It just seemed pretty lame that was all it took. I guess I expected more of a fight or convincing on Colin's part. Other than that I thought it touched on a lot of issues that kids deal with today.
Kids will enjoy the story and learn about the Civil War from the unique perspective of soldier ghosts. As always, the Foleys weave in family matters in a way that younger readers can understand. The one thing I didn't like is the "first person" style, which may work fine for kids of the intended audience range (9-12) but as a senior reader I prefer the "third person" perspective.
I enjoyed this story but felt it was a little slow beginning. I believe in ghosts but the way these ghosts are portrayed and with the ending as it is Colin would have changed history and the battle wouldn't be reenacted every year. Just my thoughts on that. Lots of history throughout the story but the way of working description in seemed forced. I look forward to reading more in this series, especially since I'm working on a 50-state mystery series myself.
